The cheapest way for you to get from Piccadilly Circus to Gatwick Airport is as follows. . .

Bakerloo Line south to Charing Cross station, see Tube map below.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/travel/downloads/tube_map.html

Take any train from Charing Cross to London Bridge (they nearly all stop there).

Sample timetable – trains from London Bridge to Gatwick Airport – journey time 30-45 mins average

The most expensive modes of transport are by TAXI or that overpriced train called the Gatwick Express which goes from London Victoria – fast yes, but very very expensive. Take the experienced travellers route as described above.

if you have the time: you could take a Southern Train from Gatwick to London Victoria (which I think is about £7 or £8) and maybe takes around 30 minutes? Then from Victoria take the district line tube west, switching onto the Picaddilly line, which will get you to Heathrow in about 45 minutes. I’m not sure how much this would be, maybe £5, or £6? So in total, it would be cheaper than the Coach service
